Following the multicultural and national conference, the Mossawa Center held a discussion meeting last Thursday evening, 13/6/2024, bringing together educators and employees in the education sector from Arabs, Jews, and Russian speakers. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Ornat Turen, a lecturer at Gordon College, and Professor Kamel Barghouthi, a board member of the Mossawa Center, who emphasized the importance of holding such meetings for educators and especially teachers in light of the current situation and the persecutions faced by Arab teachers.
The attendees welcomed the idea, appreciating that it was the first time a small meeting was held for discussion among education sector employees from different groups speaking several languages. This reflects respect for the existing linguistic diversity, which should be mirrored in the education system.
The attendees discussed various issues and challenges facing teachers, especially Arabs, and the restriction of freedom of expression within the education system. The participants proposed an initial vision for developing the education system, emphasizing the importance of developing curricula that respect cultural, national, and linguistic diversity, and building long-term joint programs to promote human rights, equality, understanding, and respect for others' identities without compromising national and ethnic identities. They also stressed the need to break language barriers, democratize the education system, and work in Arab and Jewish schools through a strategic plan that will influence public opinion in the future towards promoting equality principles by working among the younger generations.
Suha Salman Mousa, the executive director of the Mossawa Center, confirmed that this meeting is held as part of our vision to deepen cultural, national, and linguistic diversity with different groups and within various fields and specialties.
