The Mossawa Center, in cooperation with the Forum of Arab Cultural Associations, announced the launch of preparations for “March of Culture" 2023. This year's March brings important messages, as it coincides with occasions that carry significant cultural and human meanings and contents at the level of our Arab society and the global level: starting with Women's Day on March 8th, and then March 13th the birthday of the poet Mahmoud Darwish, March 20th is International Tales Day, March 21st is Mother's Day, the beginning of Spring and International Day for the Fight against Racism, and finally, March 30th marks the 47th anniversary of the everlasting Land Day. In light of the epidemic of violence sweeping our Arab society and the escalation of racial discrimination policies towards Arab citizens, we need more than ever to promote culture and cultural events among all segments of our people.
The late writer Salman Natour, the creator of the first “March of Culture” in 2011, who had a fundamental role in shaping the national identity of the Arab minority and belonging to the land and the homeland, taught us through his literature: “We are proud of our culture because it has evolved and risen despite all the conditions of oppression and racial discrimination, as we, the Palestinians at home, have proven that our cultural front is fortified and rich, aware of its external and internal obstacles, and defying them. It remains a culture of resistance that clings to its historical roots, as an extension of the Palestinian national culture that flourished before the Nakba, and was revived after it, and at the same time, it is renewed with its artistic tools. It’s a diverse culture that flourishes, and spreads locally and globally”.
To conclude, we call on the Arab local authorities, political parties, schools, and civil and cultural institutions active in Arab society to establish and intensify cultural and national events and activities by embracing artistic and literary activities that contribute to deepening human values, respecting pluralism, and encouraging creativity and art in all its forms. We also call on the active cultural associations to submit their proposals for cultural works in March.
It is worth noting, that several towns have started preparing for the “March of Culture” 2023 locally, where the Preparatory Committee met and formulated its program for this year in advance, with our best wishes for success to all!
